Chasing Curiosity: My Journey into Tech – Braiden Cuadra

Almost two years ago now, I took the leap and joined Macquarie Cloud Services with a deep curiosity for cyber security. At the time, I was in the thick of my Computer Science degree at the University of Wollongong, majoring in Cyber Security. I was still studying and learning, but little did I know how much more growth there was to come from within the NOC.
My interview experience, although intense, was what made me realise this was where I wanted to launch my career. First discussions with the Team Leaders, I was given the opportunity to peer into the Data Centre and NOC. As I walked away, I knew not only was this a great job opportunity, but also there was a clear view into what working at Macquarie Cloud Services would be like: challenging and fast-paced, but most importantly supportive and inspiring.
HMC Tier 1 showed many trials and learning opportunities. The NOC positioned right next to the Data Centre felt like I was working in the core of the internet itself. From viewing through a window, to now roaming within them, there was a sense of awe. The acronyms and jargon often spoke, and the speed at which conversations flowed. I remember wondering if I was in over my head. But over time, I began to learn the language. Quickly picking things up thanks to the continued guidance from my colleagues and leaders.
Getting the hands-on experience with my first few tickets and running around the Data Halls in search of a firewall, I grew more confident. Fast forward to today, I’ve found myself in a position where I can share my knowledge with new grads, just like others once did for me.
One of the best parts of this graduate program is how learning never stops. As someone who began this journey with a passion for cyber security, it’s been exciting to see my interests evolve. Through daily exposure to a vast array of technologies, I found myself drawn to DevOps practices and the power of Microsoft Azure.
That shift has been supported every step of the way, from the certifications I’ve earned (CCNA, NSE and Az-104) to the upcoming RHCSA I’ll be tackling next. The program didn’t just build my technical skills, it helped me discover new ones. It opened my eyes to what I truly enjoy working on, and gave me the space to explore it.
While juggling full-time work and university wasn’t always easy, the program made it manageable. With flexibility, support, and a strong cohort of like-minded peers, I never felt like I was doing it alone. Now, with graduation from UOW just around the corner this July, I can honestly say these last two years have shaped me more than any lecture ever could.
As I approach the completion of the graduate program, I feel like this is just the start of my journey. With my initial curiosities drawing me towards Cyber Security, now expanding into a passion for DevOps, automation, and Microsoft Azure. In the coming years, I want to continue building up my foundations and expanding further to follow my passion for all things tech and cloud infrastructure. The past two years have given me the confidence to continue chasing my passion, and I am excited to see where this next chapter in my career will take me.
